Abstract
Cross sections for the photoproduction of charmed mesons are derived which are in agreement with the recent observations. The present hypothesis is that the photoproduction of bare charm is given by, first, the dissociation of the vector mesons corresponding to the photon into the respective quark-antiquark pairs, followed by the hadronization of the same by the quark-jet-production mechanism. A possible implication of this for inelastic hadronic collisions in general is also speculated.
