Abstract

The population and decay of excited states in Mg24 have been investigated using the C12(O16,C12C12)α reaction at beam energies of 135 and 160MeV. This measurement permitted the decay spectrum to be measured up to Mg24 excitation energies of 70MeV. Resonance structures were observed up to an excitation energy of 49.4MeV and spin J=18. The results are discussed in terms of the termination of a deformed C12+C12 cluster band.
