Abstract

The level structure and configurations of At216 have been studied by observing the alpha decay of Fr220, which is in secular equilibrium with Ac224. Six of the 16 observed states are tentatively assigned to the configuration π(h9/2)3υ(g9/2)5, and four to the mixed configuration π(h9/2)3υ(g9/2)4(i11/2)+π(h9/2)2(f 7/2)υ(g9/2)5. These two configurations in At216 are compared with the corresponding configurations in Bi212 and Bi210. The shape transitions are traced from the quadrupole-octupole deformed Ac224 through Fr220 and At216, to Bi212, described by the spherical shell model, using the alpha decay sequence beginning with Pa228. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
