Abstract

Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on the S=12 quasi-one-dimensional system La5Ca9Cu24O41, which consists of edge-sharing CuO4 chains. We observed that the chains show an antiferromagnetic long-range ordering below TN=10.5K with ferromagnetic correlations within the chain. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, an ordering of oxygen moments (0.02μB) as well as that of Cu moments (0.2μB) is observed. The oxygen moments are coupled with Cu moments ferromagnetically.
