Search for $\mathit{CP}$ Violation in ${\mathit{B}}^{\pm }\to \mathit{J}/\mathit{\psi }{\mathit{K}}^{\pm }$ and ${\mathit{B}}^{\pm }\to \mathit{\psi }\left(2\mathit{S}\right){\mathit{K}}^{\pm }$ Decays

We present a search for direct $\mathrm{CP}$ violation in $B^{\pm }\to J/\psi K^{\pm }$ and $B^{\pm }\to \psi \left(2S\right)K^{\pm }$ decays. In a sample of $9.7\times {10}^{6}B\overline{B}$ meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have fully reconstructed $534B^{\pm }\to J/\psi K^{\pm }$ and $120B^{\pm }\to \psi \left(2S\right)K^{\pm }$ decays with very low background. We have measured the $\mathrm{CP}$-violating charge asymmetry to be $[+1.8\mathrm{}\pm 4.3(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.4(\mathrm{syst}\left)\right]\%$ for $B^{\pm }\to J/\psi K^{\pm }$ and $[+2.0\mathrm{}\pm 9.1(\mathrm{stat})\pm 1.0(\mathrm{syst}\left)\right]\%$ for $B^{\pm }\to \psi \left(2S\right)K^{\pm }$.
