Abstract

We compute the density of states ρ(ɛ) in N coupled chains with random hopping. At zero energy, ρ(ɛ) shows a singularity that strongly depends on the parity of N. For odd N, ρ(ɛ)1/|ɛln3ɛ|, with and without time-reversal symmetry. For even N, ρ(ɛ)|lnɛ| in the presence of time-reversal symmetry, while there is a pseudogap, ρ(ɛ)|ɛlnɛ|, in the absence of time-reversal symmetry.
