Abstract

Based on symmetry considerations, Eulerian quantities are defined which can serve as diagnostics for the regions of the flow where Lagrangian chaos is possible in a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow. The applicability of the diagnostics is tested in two model flows which are perturbative solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation: the eccentric Taylor vortex and the (concentric) wavy Taylor vortex.
