Are the Einstein and Brans-Dicke Theories of Gravitation Equivalent?

Abstract

The identification of Einstein's general theory of relativity with the Brans-Dicke gravitational theory implicit in a recent paper by Harrison in this journal is shown to be based on a misunderstanding of Einstein's paper, "Hamilton's Principle and the General Theory of Relativity."
