Abstract
Braginsky has proposed a speed meter (a speed or momentum measuring device), consisting of a small Fabry-Perot cavity rigidly attached to a freely moving test mass. This work devises an optical readout strategy which enables the meter, when monitoring a classical force via speed changes, to beat the standard quantum limit—at least in principle.
