Generalized Riemann ζ-function regularization and Casimir energy for a piecewise uniform string

Abstract

The generalized ζ-function techniques will be utilized to investigate the Casimir energy for the transverse oscillations of a piecewise uniform closed string. We find that the ζ-function regularization method can lead straightforwardly to a correct result.
