Polarization in inclusive $Λ$ and $\bar{Λ}$ production at large $p_{T}$

Abstract

A study of the inclusive polarization of $Λ$ hyperons produced by 400-GeV/c protons incident on nuclear targets has been performed at Fermilab. The polarization P of the $Λ$ has been mapped over a large range of $x_{F}$ and $p_{T}$ to good precision for $p_{T}$ up to 3.8 GeV/c. The magnitude of the polarization at fixed $x_{F}$ rises with $p_{T}$ to a plateau at about 1 GeV/c, and the size of the plateau increases monotonically with $x_{F}$ . The $\bar{Λ}$ were found to be unpolarized for $p_{T} < 2.4$ GeV/c. A target-nucleus dependence for the $Λ$ polarization has been observed.
