Abstract

We have performed a measurement of optical absorption in multiferroic MnWO4 in high magnetic fields. This material undergoes magnetic-field-induced successive phase transitions at low temperatures. The spectrum of the optical absorption originating from spin-forbidden dd excitations at Mn2+ ions was found to change with the phase transitions. The observed magnetochromism suggests that the magnetic moments align approximately along the b axis in the high-field (HF) paraelectric phase above 12 T.
