Abstract

Barriers and energy surfaces of competing decay channels of the metal clusters Na10++, Na12++, Na18++, and Na22++ have been computed. In general, evaporation of a charged trimer is the favored fission path. Due to shell effects, evaporation of a single ion is energetically comparable in the case of Na10++, and symmetric fission is equivalent in the case of Na18++.
