Abstract

Using the phenomenological model of Padmore and Cole, we have reinvestigated the nature of the "bubble" surrounding a 2S3 metastable helium atom in liquid helium. The principal result of this work is that a reasonable 2S32P3 absorption line shift is obtained in good agreement with the model of Hickman, Steets, and Lane, and with experiment, and that a local liquid-helium density function is obtained in good agreement with that determined in a very different manner by Hansen and Pollock.
