Abstract

The displacement between the 2s and 2p12 levels of hydrogen is calculated on the assumption that it is caused by interaction with the radiation field; the calculation is relativistic, but the spin of the electron is neglected. The theory gives a finite result, agreeing closely with the experimental value.
