Measurement of the Differential Cross Section for Events with Large Total Transverse Energy in $\mathit{p}\overline{\mathit{p}}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{\mathit{s}}=1.8\mathrm{}\mathrm{TeV}$

We present a measurement of the differential cross section $d\sigma /d\Sigma E_T^{\mathrm{jet}}$ for the production of multijet events in $p\overline{p}$ collisions where the sum is over all jets with transverse energy $E_T^{\mathrm{jet}}>E_T^{\min }$. The measured cross section for events with $\Sigma E_T^{\mathrm{jet}}>320\mathrm{}\mathrm{GeV}$ is compared to $O\left({\alpha }_s^3\right)$ perturbative QCD predictions and QCD parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The agreement between the $O\left({\alpha }_s^3\right)$ predicted and observed event rates is reasonable for $E_T^{\min }=100\mathrm{}\mathrm{GeV}$, but poorer for $E_T^{\min }=20\mathrm{}\mathrm{GeV}$.
