Abstract
We report the observation of the bottom, doubly-strange baryon through the decay chain , where , , and , using of data from collisions at , and recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. A signal is observed whose probability of arising from a background fluctuation is , or 5.5 Gaussian standard deviations. The mass is measured to be . The lifetime of the baryon is measured to be . In addition, for the baryon we measure a mass of and a lifetime of . Under the assumption that the and are produced with similar kinematic distributions to the baryon, we find and for baryons produced with transverse momentum in the range of .
