New laboratory technique for measuring the photon charge

Abstract

A measurement of the deflection of a laser beam in a modulated magnetic field with a prototype apparatus has produced an upper limit on the charge of the photon of 8.5×1017e. It is shown that an improved apparatus could attain a sensitivity of 1021e.
