Salim Received 25 September 2000; revised 27 November 2000; published 22 March 2001 We show that the propagation of photons in a nonlinear dielectric medium can be described in terms of a modification of the metric structure of space-time. We solve completely the case in which the dielectric constant ε is an arbitrary function of the electric field ε(E). The particular case of no dependence on the field reduces to the Gordon metric. ©2001 The American Physical Society
