Abstract
Our recent analysis of the quantization of theories with constraints has demonstrated that in a quantum theory with a nontrivial gauge group the constraints must never be realized by Hermitian operators. Thus, abandoning the Hermiticity requirement, we have succeeded in discovering an essentially unique, consistent factor ordering of the Dirac constraints for the general theory of relativity.
