Proton decay in SU(5) in a field-theoretic quark model

Abstract

We compute the branching ratios for the two-body decays of the proton within SU(5). A field-theoretic quark model recently proposed by one of the authors has been utilized to describe the hadronic matrix elements, including relativistic effects for the decay products. The results we obtain here are broadly in agreement with other SU(5) calculations. We also here confirm a large branching ratio for pμ+K0 mode, also noted earlier, which has experimental relevance as the muon is easier to detect. The total lifetime is here computed to be 1.3×1031 yr.
