Abstract

The surface lattice dynamics of Ru(001) has been investigated by a combined first-principles calculation and high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. We find very anomalous dispersion curves of low-frequency surface modes and indications of strong softening of longitudinally polarized vibrations. They originate from large modifications of in-plane surface force constants unexpected for such a compact hexagonal surface.
