End states due to a spin-Peierls transition in quantum wires

Abstract

We report the occurrence of a spin-Peierls transition in the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas. In finite quantum wires this transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state leads to localized end states created by the periodic effective potential of a spin-density wave.
