Abstract

A study has been done of the induced charge density, wake potential, and stopping power of swift unit charges in an electron gas. An extended Thomas-Fermi theory is applied to the internal kinetic energy of the Fermi fluid. The von Weizsa¨cker parameter is constrained by the exact Coulomb enhancement of the electron density at the projectile site. Illustrative results for protons and antiprotons are presented.
